Mortgage write-off story maintains momentum

The legal PR work I am doing is continuing to pay off handsomely for Dublin law firm Anthony Joyce & Co, after having Anthony on RTE TV’s main Six One News last week, and getting him a front page splash in Ireland’s best selling newspaper The Sunday Independent yesterday, today his story also featured on page 2 of The Irish Times (see below) following a telephone interview he did as he was cycling around the countryside on Sunday.

Today he also featured heavily in the broadcast media where he was on Newstalk’s Breakfast Show, a national radio station for which he also did a pre-recorded interview on Sunday.  Then he did a live interview for Today FM’s Ray Darcy Show, also a national radio station, the same interview was then also used on the much respected Last Word, hosted by ex-Sunday Tribune Editor, Matt Cooper.

I’ll be adding MP3s of these interviews shortly, meanwhile here’s The Irish Times piece.

Front page splash on Ireland’s best selling newspaper

Today I had a bit of coup getting the front page headline, known in the trade as a ‘splash’, on Ireland’s biggest selling newspaper The Sunday Independent. The newspapers has over a million readers, that’s a quarter of the country’s population, so it was a big day for the client, Dublin legal firm Anthony Joyce & Co.

It’s incredible how sometimes a story can gain momentum. We contacted by the journalist Ronal Quinlan following Anthony’s appearance on the TV on the RTE Six One News on Thursday please click here to see it. Ronald needed written confirmation of the decision from the mortgage lender before his editor would give the approval for the story, so we needed to get approval from the client to release the letter and give get to him for his internal approval process. A newspaper doesn’t wait as print deadlines can’t be missed and ended up cutting it a bit fine, but thankfully the front pages are the last to be completed, needless to say I had a busy Saturday. But, it was well worth it to get such a major from page for a client.

Global Flood Solutions gets their Medicine Hat on as a State of Emergency is declared in Alberta, Canada

Roscommon firm’s Big Bag System deployed in Canada and US in €300,000 deals in advance of Spring thaw and predicted flooding across North America.

26th April, 2011; Roscommon, Ireland: Global Flood Solutions (GFS) has secured major export deals for their Big Bag System in Canada and the USA as local authorities there prepare for the Spring thaw after a winter of heaving snow, which it predicts will cause major flooding across North America.

The firm’s award winning Big Bag System has already been in action last week in the city of Medicine Hat, where heavy snow in the Cypress Hills is causing major flooding in the Prairies of Alberta. The Medicine Hat Engineering Department have signed a C$300,000 (€225,000) deal for several kilometres of the Big Bag System, the first delivery of which was put in place overnight last week to protect the town after the local dam on the Saskatchewan River was breached following the declaring of a State of Emergency across Alberta.

Big Bag System deployed as State of Emergency declared in Alberta Canada

Global Flood Solutions’s award winning flood defence barrier the Big Bag System was used in an emergency deployment in Canada last week. Heavy winter snow in the Cypress Hills in Alberta is melting and the highest flooding in 150 years is predicted. Last week the dam above the city of Medicine Hat was breached; Global Flood Solutions received a call from the city’s Department of Engineering that they needed the Big Bag System. In their business a quick response is vital and with 24 hours the first deployment of the Big Bag System had been flown up to Alberta and was being deployed.

Here’s the footage:

Medicine Hat was protected and the Canadians were very happy with the robustness of the Big Bag System and how it could hold back significant amounts of water. Crucially it was able to be deployed very quickly.

The State of Emergency in respect of flooding is expected to stay in place until the end of May.

Newstalk’s Henry McKean interviews Snickers Workwear at The National Skills Competition.

Last week Henry came down the National Skills Competition 2011 courtesy of Snickers Workwear, the work clothing company that sponsors the Competition hosted by DIT and CIT. Henry interviewed Jenny Johnson from Snickers Workwear along with some of the apprentices and examiners involved in the 54th annual National Skills Competition 2011. You can listen to the slot below.

A great segment of the Sean Moncrieff Show on Newstalk is the ten minute slot Henry has every afternoon, where he does an outside broadcast and meets a diverse range of people from the four corners of Ireland. Henry is a very up and coming broadcaster; he’s made the slot his own and now also has slots on Newstalks’s flagship breakfast programme and also turns up regularly on George Hook’s show The Right Hook. This success has led Henry to getting his own Saturday morning show from 9am-11am where he also repeats some of his interviews from Moncrieff.

He’s also making a name for himself doing very unique documentaries on TV3 where the he has focused on travellers and hare coursing. In these documentaries Henry aims to dispel some of the myths and explores the prejudices these sections of society face. Henry has an Irish background but was brought in England. He’s from an affluent background but has a great way of dealing with people from working class backgrounds and has a knack of getting people to talk to him, like Louise Theroux does. And, like Theroux he is quite quirky but I think he’s lot funnier than Theroux. It’s a very entertaining slot.

Apprentices from all over Ireland will compete over three days in 21 trades; the National Champions will then represent Ireland at WorldSkills London 2011

4th April, 2011, Dublin, Ireland: The 54th annual National Skills Competition starts on Monday when apprentices from all over Ireland will converge on Dublin Institute of Technology and Cork Institute of Technology to compete in an intense three day event. Sponsored for the 6th year in a row by respected clothing manufacturer Snickers Workwear, the event aims to find the National Champions to represent Ireland in each of the 21 trades on show.

Since the 1950s the National Skills Competition has tested every aspect of the skills and workmanship of apprentices, in a high pressure environment. The winners will then have the honour of representing Ireland and their respective trades in what has been dubbed ‘Olympics for tradespeople’ – the prestigious WorldSkills London 2011 in October.

David Macken, Managing Director of Snickers Workwear said: “Just like the 1980s we are seeing Ireland export its tradespeople abroad, so it’s vital that we stop this skills’ drain and support Irish businesses. This week the apprentices will receive three days of intensive testing of their skills and craftmanship, which will ensure only the best competitors can win the title of National Champion in their trade and go on to represent Ireland on the World stage.”

WorldSkills London 2011 will test the skills of the Irish Champions against the best tradespeople from 53 countries across the globe and the chance to be crowned a World Champion. In previous years Ireland has performed particularly well, coming second at WorldSkills Calgary 2009; winning five medals overall, including two Golds. This year they hope to go one better and win the competition outright.

Irish apprentices have proven that they have some of the highest levels of workmanship and WorldSkills London 2011 provides us with a fantastic opportunity to demonstrate this at a global level.” added David Macken, “we have an enviable record at WorldSkills where we’ve won the Gold Medal for Automobile Technology in three out of the last four years and also won Gold last time in Aircraft Maintenance. Ireland came second overall, that’s an incredible achievement for such a small country.”

The National Skills Competition 2011 is launched at the Gresham Hotel in Dublin on Monday 4th April. The competition commences Tuesday (5th) and finishes on Thursday (7th) when the judging will take place. The event culminates with awards’ ceremonies on Friday 24th April in The Mansion House, Dublin and CIT in Cork.

To qualify for National Skills, competitors have had to win their local round of National Skills, so they really are the best apprentices in the country.

Twenty one different trades are being tested including: Aircraft Maintenance; Automobile Technology; Autobody Repair; Bricklaying; Carpentry; Car Painting; Cookery; Heavy Vehicle Mechanics; Painting & Decorating; Plumbing; Polymechanics; Plastering and Sheetmetal Work, amongst others.

Snickers Workwear will also provide all the clothing for the competitors, who will be kitted out from head to toe in durable stylish gear from Europe’s largest workwear manufacturer.

About Snickers Workwear

Snicker Workwear manufactures and provides workwear for professional tradespeople. Their products are renowned for their quality, function and innovative solutions. The company was founded in Sweden in 1975 and since then has grown strongly so that today, Snickers Workwear is one of Europe’s leading brands in work wear, and is represented in 15 countries.

Snickers was founded by Matti Viio who worked as an electrician from 1959 to 1972 Whilst in those years working methods, technology, materials and tools evolved, but workwear was still the same as in the mid-nineteenth century. Workwear failed to fill modern requirements concerning function, comfort and design with manufacturers showing no interest in the workers real needs. In the end Matti Viio designed his own garments to work in.

Sophisticated testing and quality control procedures are carried out at every stage of the process, from the moment a new design leaves the drawing board through to final quality certification. Snickers Workwear makes relevant functions on durable and reliable garments to fit the roughest conditions. All functions are tested by our end-customers.

The spirit of Snickers Workwear is the same as it was when the company started. Snickers Workwear has always solved functional problems for professional needs. A combination of professional know-how and professional pride and self-esteem. Snickers Workwear’s motto is hard-wearing timeless garments with good design.
